on a circular basis starting from and ending at 'The Grange'):
CASTLEHEAD VIEWPOINT

DERWENTWATER SHORE
WALLA CRAG/ASHNESS BRIDGE
Sally and Mark can supply maps, advice and a filled flask for
your safety and comfort. Also, on the very rare occasions it rains

Easy+ (leave car at The Grange). OLD
RAILWAY LINE/LATRIGG
Follow
old railway line in NE direction for one and a half miles before
turning towards Lonscale. At junction take path signed Latrigg/Skiddaw
and after 1/2 mile branch left through gate. Follow path to top
of Latrigg (1100 feet) which boasts fantastic views over Keswick
and Derwentwater towards Borrowdale.
Take right off Latrigg and take semi-circular path down to Spooney
Green/Fitz Park and Keswick for a well earned cup of tea!
Allow 2 1/4 hours
Moderate (drive time 10 mins) CAUSEY
PIKE & SCAR CRAGS
Park
at side of road near Stoneycroft or 300 metres nearer Braithwaite
where there is more space. Set off from bridge either hugging a
diagonal route up Causey or steeper route up Rowling End.
Not difficult but your heart will be beating at a 'fair rate', as
you are climbing as soon as you leave the car. Little bit of clambering
to reach the top of Causey (may need to
use hands if windy) which boasts beautiful views over Keswick towards
Skiddaw. Continue for 1 mile in same direction along Scar Crag
ridge which is pleasant walking at 2000 feet. Descend in same direction
and just before Sail rises in front, turn right (fairly steep
at beginning) and follow path/old mine road on left hand side of
Stoneycroft Gill back to your car.
A pint at the Swinside Inn to view your conquest may be a good idea!
Allow 3 hours
Strenuous (drive time 1/2 hour) RED
PIKE & HAYSTACKS
Drive
to Buttermere via Honister Pass and park at Gatesgarth Farm (parking
fee). Walk through farm and walk for 1/2 hour to literally the other
end of Buttermere looking for a steep path which will take you up
via Bleaberry Tarn to Red Pike.
This path will take you from almost sea level to 2500 feet without
any real relief from gradient. Your walk after enjoying views and
taking a rest on Red Pike doubles back walking parallel with Buttermere
on a ridge over High
Stile and High Crag before descending very steeply to
Seat.
Drop off Seat and climb Wainwright's favourite top Haystacks.
After experiencing this memorable fell-top I would recommend that
you retrace your steps and descend by Scarth Gap to the end
of Buttermere and Gatesgarth Farm. Drive to Buttermere for
refreshment at 'The Bridge' and return to The Grange via Newlands
Valley.
